There are particular sound signals that are to be used when you first get underway. One prolonged blast signifies that you are about to get underway. If you are going to make way in reverse, you need

1 Prolonged blast means you are underway and making way not that you are about to.  3 short blasts means operating astern propulsion but you may still be going forward.

3 prolonged blasts followed by one short blast on the ships' whistle has no meaning in everyday use.

A prolonged blast is about 4-6 seconds long, while a short blast is about 1 second long.

The closest signals are:

3 short blasts - 'I am operating astern propulsion'.

2 prolonged 1 short - (In a narrow channel or fairway) 'I intend to overtake you on your starboard side'.

1 prolonged 2 short - 'I am a... Vessel not under command (NUC) restricted ability to manoeuvre (RAM, constrained by draught (CBD), sailing vessel, vessel engaged in fishing or vessel engaged in towing/pushing.
