What is the meaning of this poem The lesson by Edward Lucie-smith?

it's about a man recalling the moment his father's death was announced in front of the whole school and how he weeps, not for grief but because he believes the school bullies will have pity on him and give him some peace for a week or two (today, it would have the opposite effect, sadly). he is also aware of being proud of being the centre of attention when it's really not about him but about his father. i find it to be a comment on the many different emotions that we can experience simultaneously, even though they may not sit well together.
