The medical term for dry mouth is xerostomia. Dryness in the mouth (xero- + stom- + -ia). In adults over 65, the number with dry mouth is about 25% of that population. It occurs when the salivary glands do not make enough saliva to keep the mouth moist. Drugs are a common cause of dry mouth and so are radiation treatments to the head.
