The candidate must be a citizen of the state
Delegates from all the states meet and elect a candidate for president and then for vice president, Nowadays so many of the delegates are committed to a particular candidate by primary elections that one candidate can have the nomination "sewed up" before the convention occurs and lately it has been the custom to let the presidential nominee pick his running mate. This did not used to be the case.
In the US, when parties were first formed, the members of Congress from each party would meet and chose a candidate.

If you write in a candidate for president on your ballot, your vote will be counted as a write-in vote for that candidate. However, write-in candidates must meet certain requirements to be eligible to win, and their chances of winning are typically very low.
If you meet all the requirements and/or were chosen by the school or whoever was running the scholarship program as a worthy candidate.
