"Mormon" is not a state, it is a nickname for a church. The name of the church has been 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' since the mid-1830's. For a handful of years prior to that (from when it was founded in 1830 until the name change) it was called 'The Church of Christ'. The name was never "Mormon", that was just a nickname given to them because the real name of the church was so long.
If you are thinking of the state that was founded by Mormons, the name has always been Utah. At one point the Mormons called it 'Deseret' but that was never the official name of the state or territory as recognized by the United States Government.
