The monster is a black, big puff of smoke that is known as the Smoke Monster (The Man in Black).

Further Explanation:

Danielle Rousseau called it a security system, and it was confirmed this season that it can take many forms, including human form. Currently, he/it is posing as john Locke, and has in the past taken the form of Yemi (Eko's brother), Alex (Ben's daughter), and Christian (Jack's father). He/it was also the unnamed character known as The Man in Black, Jacob's nemesis and/or his brother, as seen in the opening scene of the S5 season finale. He can be "called" by others, and seems to pass judgment on others (as seen with Eko) and often kills people in Smokey form.

In the season 3 finale, Jack and the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 set a trap for the Others, who were coming to abduct Sun and any other pregnant women. Sayid, Jin, and Bernard remained behind to set off dynamite placed in their tents, while Charlie and Desmond set off for an underwater Dharma station to shut off a jamming device that was preventing anyone on the island from contacting the outside world, and Jack leads the rest of the survivors to the radio tower where Danielle Russo sent her distress signal from in order to shut it off.

And in the "flashback", a bearded Jack is all over the place, either drunk or on some drugs, and suicidal. He's getting ready to jump off a bridge when a car crashes on it. Jack decides to rescue the mother and child inside the car.

In the underwater Dharma station, Charlie is captured by two female Others, who interrogate him until he reveals that he has come to shut off the jamming device. They call Ben, who realizes that Juliet has betrayed him. He tries to call his people heading for the beach, but they are already there and have their walkie's turned off. When the Others get close to the tents, Sayid and Bernard shoot the dynamite in two tents and kill several of the Others, but Jin misses his target, and they are captured by the three remaining Others. The survivors being led by Jack witness the explosions from a cliff, and afte only seeing two explosions, realize something went wrong, but Jack keeps leading them to the radio tower.

In the "flashback", Jack is getting stitches on his forehead when his ex-wife Sarah walks in. She only came because she was still listed as Jack's emergency contact. They talk briefly, then Sarah leaves.

On the beach, the formerly-bearded Tom radios Ben that it was a trap, that mst of their team is dead, and most of the survivors are gone. They threaten to kill Jin, so Bernard confesses where Jack and the others are going. Ben then heads off with his "daughter", Alex, to intercept Jack and the survivors in order to convince them to stop what they're doing.

In the ditch where Ben shot John Locke and left him for dead, Locke wakes up and realizes his legs can't move. He finds an old gun among the dead Dharma people and prepares to shoot himself in the head. Then, all of a sudden, the image of Walt appears above him, and tells him not to kill himself because he has work to do.

In the "flashback", Jack drives to a funeral parlor where there is a coffin and all empty chairs. Jack asks the owner if the funeral is over. He says there was no funeral, just a viewing, and no one but Jack has come. The owner asks Jack if he's friend or family, and Jack says neither. Who could it be that died?

While the survivors continue their trek, Sawyer informs Jack that he's going back to the beach to help their friends. Jack asks what he's going to accomplish with no weapons, and Juliet says she knows where there are some weapons, so Jack lets them go. Kate wants to go with Sawyer, but he says he doesn't want her to go with him. Before they go, Juliet gives jack a kiss goodbye, with Kate watching. Sawyer and Juliet are haeding back, and Juliet confesses she lied about the weapons so Jack would let them go. Then, Hurley comes running back, asking to go with them because he wants to help, but Sawyer refuses to let him go, and so Hurley sadly walks back.

In the boat in the water above the underwater Dharma station, Desmond wakes up after being knocked out by Charlie in the previous episode becaus he was going to go in Charlie's place. Desmond looks down in the water, then finds himself being shot at by Mikhail, who Ben sent to find out how Charlie got down into the station. Desmond dives into the water and swims down to the underwater station. Charlie tells him to hide because the two women are inside the room with the jamming equipment. The women hear Charlie talking, but when they come out to check, Charlie is singing "You All Everybody". Desmond took shelter inside a locker.

Later, in the underwater station, Charlie is singing an annoying song, and on of the women threatens to shoot him with a spear-gun, but before she reaches the locker where it (and Desmond) is in, Mikhail arrives, asking questions about where Desmond is, and why Ben lied to the rest of the Others about the station being flooded. When Ben calls, he says to Mikhail he lied to protect the island, then asks Mikhail to kill the women and Charlie.

Ben appears to the survivors, along with his "daughter" Alex, and ask Jack to speak with him alone. He and Jack walk off to speak, and Ben asks Jack not to attempt to call the boat that Naomi came from, because he claims they represent people who have come to destroy them all. Jack, of course, refuses, so Ben calls the beach and informs Jack he has Sayid, Jin, and Bernard, and if Jack doesn't hand Ben Naomi's radio, they will be killed. Jack refuses, and he hears three shots fired, then in a rage he beats Ben to a bloody pulp. Then he radios Tom and says after his people get rescued, he's gonna find Tom and kill him. Jack drags Ben back to his people and orders that he be tied up. Danielle walks up to Alex, and Ben "introduces" Alex to her mother.

In the underwater station, Mikhail shoots one women, and when the other tries to run, he shoots her in the back. She's wounded, but not dead yet. When Mikhail positions himself to finish the job, but then Desmond comes out of the lockr and shoots Mikhail with the spear-gun. When Mikhail falls, Desmond picks up the gun and gets ready to shoot the other woman, but Charlie says they need her alive. Charlie convinces the woman to give him the code to disable the jamming device, and she says the code is "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys, that the keyboard was designed by a musician.

In the "flashback", Jack is at a pharmacy asking for a refill of his "prescription", but the pharmacist says he has already exceeded his refill. Jack tries handing her another prescription with his father's name on it, but when she says she has to call his father's office to confirm the prescription, Jack bangs on her desk with his fist and says forget it. He then walks off, knocking over a sunshade display in the process.

Back on the beach, Sawyer and Juliet wonder how they're going to rescue their friends with no guns, when suddenly, Hurley drives his hippy van past them and runs over the lead Other, Price. Then, when the young Other walks in front of Sayid to investigate the van, Sayid jumps up still tied, knocks the Other down, and uses his legs and feet to snap the Other's neck. Meanwhile, Tom crawls over to get his gun, then Juliet stops him. Tom "waves the white flag", but Sawyer shoots Tom in the chest and says, "That's for taking the kid off the raft.", referring to when they took Walt. Hurley says Tom was surrendering, but Sawyer says he didn't believe him.

In the "flashback" Jack is stealing some drugs from the hospital, and is caught by another doctor, who asks if Jack is drunk. Jack asks him to get his father down here, and if he's drunker than his father, then he'll leave. Then Jack says, "Don't you dare pity me!" and walks out of the hospital.

While heading for the radio tower, Jack hears Hurley over Ben's walkie, and asks Hurley where he's at, and Hurley says he's at the beach, where he saved Sawyer, Juliet, Jin, Sayid, and Bernard. The survivors celebrate that their friends are alive, and Claire asks Hurley if Charlie is back yet, but he isn't.

In the underwater station, Charlie prepares to enter the code while Desmond gathers some diving equipment so they can get out of the station. Charlie shuts off the equipment, then notices someone is calling. He answers, and it's Penelope, Desmond's girlfriend. Charlie calls for Desmond, then asks Penny if she's on the boat, but she has no idea what he's tlking about. The boat isn't her's. Desmond is heading for Charlie when he notices that Mikhail is missing. All of a sudden, Charlie hears a tapping on the window, and Mikhail is outside in the water with a grenade and pulls the pin. Charlie realizes the station's about to be flooded, so he closes the door to save Desmond. The grenade explodes, and the room begins flooding. Before he dies, Charlie writes "Not Penny's Boat" on his hand and shows it to Desmond, then he apparently drowns.

Meanwhile, Claire's baby, Aaron, is crying for a reason unknown to Claire. Then, Naomi's radio flashes green, indicating the jamming has stopped. She tries using it, but hears Russo's message. It doesn't matter, because they've reached the radio tower. Danielle shuts off her distress signal, then they go outside and Naomi calls her boat, but then falls to the ground with a knife in her back after Locke has thrown it. He then aims the gunat Jack and tells him not to pick it up, but Jack does. Locke threatens to kill Jack, but Jack says, "You're done keeping me on ths island!" Locke then lowers his gun and tells Jack he isn't supposed o do this. Then someone answers on the other end of the phone, and Jack asks them to come rescue his people, and the man says they're on their way. "Looks" like they're finally going to be rescued.

In the "flashback", Jack is in his mess of an apartment, with plane tickets and maps all over the place. He receives a call and asks the other person to meet him at the airport. Jack is waiting near a fence near the airport at night when a car pulls up. Whoever it is is in the shadows, and out of the shadows emerges Kate! OMG! It wasn't a flashback! It was a flashforward into the future. Kate asks Jack why he called her, and Jack asked if she went to the funeral. Kate asks why she'd want to go to the funeral. Jack then says he keeps flying over the pacific, hoping to crash onto the island again. Kate then says she has to go, that "he" will wonder where she is. As she leaves, Jack yells, "We shouldn't have left!" A plane takes off from the airport, then the screen quickly fades to black and then pops up: LOST

The Smoke Monster is is the mortal enemy and brother of Jacob. He started as a regular human, but when he killed his mother for forbidding him to leave the island, Jacob throws him into the "Light," a special lake that with holds the heart of the island. No one was aloud to touch the 'Light', so in result of being thrown in, the "Man in Black" of which he was referred to, cause his mother didn't name him, had become the smoke monster. Jacob was the key reason of why the smoke monster existed. The smoke monster was then determined not only revenge, but to destroy the island, kill all the canidates, and sail away from the island, where he would reek havoc on the world. But he was forbidden to kill his brother, so he had tricked Ben Linus into killing Jacob for him. A mysterious boy had been sighted many times after that, and about 7 episodes later, was discovered to be Jacob. Meanwhile, The Man in Black disguised himself in the form of John Locke as to gain the islanders' trust so that he could kill them. He possessed Claire and Sayeed into his minions or followers. Later on, in the finale, Jack (Who volunteered for Jacob to choose him to be the new protector of the island) turned the Man in Black mortal again by turning of the 'Light', but was unable to kill him. While trying to kill the Man in Black, right as Jack was about to die, Kate shot the monster straight in the back which killed him.

Talk about sibling rivalry, huh? LOL
