I would say The Bible. Consider that the bible has been banned in various countries from ancient times until now. I believe it is currently banned in 52 countries. Historically it has been banned by many Communist and Muslim countries and even at times by The Roman Catholic church.

One of the most banned books in America is "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. It has faced numerous challenges and bans in schools and libraries due to its language, sexual content, and themes of rebellion and teenage angst. Despite this, the book remains a classic in American literature.

While the bible does show up on lists of banned/challenged books, it isn't even close to the most banned of all time. I'm not sure there is one specific book, as the things conservatives freak out about change with the times.

The number 1 most banned/challenged book between 2000-2009 on the American Library Association's top 100 is the Harry Potter series. For the decade before that, number 1 was the Scary Stories series.

The bible does not appear in either list of 100 most banned/challenged for that 20 year period. Books that appear to this day, without fail, are: To Kill a Mockingbird, Brave New World, The Chocolate War, Slaughterhouse Five, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Of Mice and Men, Native Son, Black Boy - and many other very brilliant works of art that are being stolen from our kids minds.

Censorship of books and other literature has been around as long as literature has been. Starting in 1559, the Roman Catholic Church started the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (List of Prohibited Books) which contained a list of books which the Catholic Church disagreed with and those books were essentially censored from most Catholic countries. The list included ideas such as heliocentric astronomy (the idea that the Earth revolved around the Sun rather than the Sun revolving around the Earth), political satires like Candide, and books that the Catholic Church considered to be sexually immoral. Before even that though many European countries regulated the printing of books that disagreed with the current rulers or the state religion.
