The current medication that is most often prescribed, used, and recommended for the treatment of the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is Ritalin (generic name: Methylphenidate)

This is also recommended for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder, which is in essence the same as ADHD but without the "hyperactivity" that is most likely the first "symptom" that teachers and parents notice in young children that leads to diagnosis.

There is another drug called "Aderral" that is also used.

There are "extended release" forms of both of these drugs(Concerta, Aderral XR), which makes life easier for parents who have children who need to obtain their medications while in school, and of course for patients who have issues of organization and remembering to take medications that constitute the "hallmark" disorganization symptom of ADD

These meds are usually given once a day, and the drug works by releasing a small amount of the medication each hour, over a period of time. This ensures that the drug is working evenly , rather than "peaking" and then declining over a short period of time.

Both of these drugs and several others that treat ADD and ADHD are becoming widely abused. They are distributed by children in the school setting, and "snorted" for a more intense "high". For this reason, it is often worth reviewing whether this is truly the best drug for the patient before administering. If the patient is or has a drug addiction history of any kind, even if they are in active recovery, this factor must be taken into account as part of a "risk vs. reward" discussion.
