In nature, bright colouring, particularly black and yellow stripes, are a warning that the wearer of those colours is poisonous, or dangerous in some other way, so birds and other predators tend to avoid them. Some insects, for example the hoverfly, copy the colouring for self-protection, but are quite harmless.

They look like wasps because in the past, those that looked more like wasps left more descendants. This happened because potential predators assumed they were wasps, with the capability to sting, and so didn't eat them.

Bees and wasps have black and yellow stripes to warn other animals that they are dangerous. The evolution of animal coloration is used not only to warn but also for camouflage, mimicry, distraction, and protection.
