∙ 12y agoThe biggest is a lenticular galaxy called IC 1101, the central galaxy of the galaxy cluster Abell 2029.
The largest galaxies that we know of are giant elliptical galaxies in the centres of clusters of galaxies. They are sometimes called cD galaxies (for giant diffuse galaxies) or BCGs (for brightest cluster galaxies). These galaxies are about 10 times more luminous that a typical galaxy (like the Milky Way) and about 100 times more massive. They can have diameters of more than 6 million light years (compare to about 100 thousand light years for the Milky Way).

∙ 10y agoThe largest galaxy on record resides inside the Abell 2029 cluster, 1.07 billion light years away in the constellation of Serpens. Designated as IC 1101, the monstrous giant elliptical galaxy measures a whopping 6 million light years (as compared to the 100,000 light years of the Milky Way) in diameter and is said to be at least 60 times as large as the Milky Way. It also contains about 100 trillion stars (200-400 billion for the Milky Way).

The galaxy has a diameter of 5-6 million light years (The milky way is a mere 100,000 light years), which makes it currently the largest known galaxy (in 2006). Larger ones may have been found since then, and of course it's entirely possible that no one has yet seen or noticed the actual largest one; it could be very, very far away.

∙ 13y agoTheoretically this would be the black hole said to exist in the centre of it, but that only counts if you consider the 'size' of the black hole as consisting of the disk and not merely the point into which everything is being pulled. So, it's the black hole at the centre, (but if for whatever reason you don't want to count that then it would just be one of the very big stars - red supergiant, perhaps?).
