Traditionally, from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War, US military snipers were always, "for emergency only, break glass", (then de-activate). Today there are so many different SNIPER RIFLES used by every nation, there is no common sniper rifle...each nation (as before) has their own...and America has a half a dozen different sniper rifles it's military alone; this doesn't count law enforcement...who have another dozen different types of sniper rifles...snipers are the "in thing" today (new fad) even Hollywood has jumped on the band wagon; The TV shows "BONES", the FBI character is playing an "Ex-Sniper", the Television show, concerning Naval Intelligence Law Enforcement, naturally the character is an "Ex-Sniper"...it's the new craze!
Prior to it's popularity, military snipers were silent and deadly (no one was supposed to know about them, stealth!).
All snipers are marksmen; but NOT all marksmen are snipers.
Did you have a specific military in mind? If you mean out of all militaries in the world, it would definitely be the Kalashnikov family of rifles. At one point, it was the FN-FAL, which saw service with over 70 countries worldwide. Most countries which used the FAL have since switched over to 5.56 weapons, although some countries have actually replaced them with Kalashnikov rifles or variants. For example, Venezuela adopted the AK-103 and AK-101 to replace their FAL rifles, while Zimbabwe adopted the AKM and Chinese Type 56 to replace their FAL variants left over from Rhodesian stocks. India replaced their FAL rifles with the INSAS, which is heavily derived from the AK, while South Africa and Israel both replaced their FAL rifles with the Galil, which is also derived from the AK.
Assuming you're referring to the US Army, and assuming you mean "gun" to refer to small arms, it's still the M16.
The standard issue service rifle is the L85A2 rifle, also known as the SA80. It would be the most commonly encountered weapon.
Still the M24.
Some of the most popular guns being used by the American military include the M-16, M-249 Saw, M40A1 which is a sniper rifle, M-24 sniper rifle, and the M4 Carbine rifle. These are among the most commonly used guns by the American military infantry and special ops branch.
A sniper rifle is simply a rifle used by a military sniper. Just about every gun shop will carry hunting rifles. The type will vary depending on what you are hunting- squirrels, rabbit, deer, turkey, bear, elk or elephants. What you are calling a "sniper rifle" is simply a bolt action center fire rifle with a telescope.
The correct term is cartridge- which is the cartridge case, primer, powder, and bullet. A sniper rifle is simply an accurate, long range rifle that is used by a sniper. It may look exactly like my long range hunting rifle- since most military sniper rifles BEGAN as a civilian hunting weapon.
You will have to define "sniper rifle". There is no meaning to that term, other than an accurate scope mounted rifle. That includes most hunting rifles.
Most guns come in black.
All are equal in this regard.
