The Chief Magistrate of a town or district in Anglo-Saxon England was called a reeve, or in Old English, a gerefa(compare to the Swedish/Norwegian/Danish noble rank 'Greve' or the German 'Graf'). A reeve was an administrative officer responsible to the Crown, usually ranked below under an Earl. Before the Conquest, there were several diffrent forms of reeve, such as town-reeve, port-reeve, and shire-reeve, which later became the sheriff.
