Insulin is probably the most well known chemical produced by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The hormone functions by activating the exocytosis of vesicles embedded with glucose transport proteins. Upon fusing with the plasma membrane, the increased number of glucose transporters increases the uptake of glucose by the cells. The pancreas also produces glucagon and somatostatin, and also amylase, trypsinogen and chymotrypsinogen, which aid in digestion.
