The Nile River Delta is one of the world's largest river deltas, at about 99 miles long and covering 150 miles of Mediterranean coastline. It is formed in Lower (Northern) Egypt where the river spreads out and drains into the Mediterranean Sea. The area has been intensively farmed for at least the last 5000 years. There are two many branches: the Damietta and the Rosetta; the Rosetta Stone was found in the Delta in 1799 near Rosetta. About half of Egypt's population live in the Delta, around 40 million people.
