The oldest Slavic city was Veliky Novgorod (renamed to just "Novgorod" in 1999)

The city was mentioned for the first time in the "Sofia First Chronicle". It says that around the year of 859 the Varangians already used the city as a trading post which means that it is possible that the city was founded even before 859 A.D.

The Varangians named the city Holmgard.
