the Final Countdown with Kirk Douglas commanding a modern Nimitz class carrier thru a time porthole (a very strange storm) to the moments just before Pearl Harbor. And, just as amazing, he and the ship and crew are transported to the vicinity of Pearl Harbor. The only redeeming feature of the silly film is the comical air combat scenes with a couple of Zeros actually trying to shout down F-14's - hilarious!

How did the aircraft carrier change warfare?

The most fundamental change that the aircraft carrier introduced to warfare was extending the range of naval fleet's effective firepower. This was made possible by the airplane. Prior to the inclusion of aircraft in the naval equation, the farthest offensive range was based on the fleet's biggest guns (on the battleships). With aircraft carriers, the range was extended by a factor of more than 10.

What is the impacts to society of the aircraft carriers?

Aircraft can strike any city anywhere anytime, thanks to the aircraft carrier. Stated another way: Prior to the carrier, airplanes NEEDED a land base to operate from. So if a country or city was too far away from any land, it would be virtually safe from air attack because NO AIRPLANE could reach it. Thanks to the carrier; no land (island) is needed.

Why did the Americans put there ships together at Pearl Harbor?

AIRPOWER was not an accepted "power" prior to the Pearl Harbor attack. Airplanes were for "Reconnaissance" and "Observation." Aircraft Carriers were NOT considered capital warships...they were warships, but were looked upon by senior naval officers as Auxillery ships that SUPPORTED the BATTLESHIPS. Aircraft Carriers were NOT part of any nation's "Battle Line." Pearl Harbor "Helped" to change that way of thinking. But the Japanese air attack against the British Battleship HMS Prince of Wales and Battlecruiser HMS Repulse only 3 days later in the China Sea on December 10, 1941 settled the matter once and for all. When those two warships went to the bottom, no one argued the point that airplanes could not sink a moving battleship with all anti-aircraft guns firing while maneuvering at sea! Now it was done. From December 10th onward, the new "Queen of the Seas" was the aircraft carrier...the Battleship was gone. Note-the aircraft that sank Prince of Wales and Repulse were Japanese ARMY airplanes that took off from land based airfields. Consequently, when mentioning "aircraft carriers", the implication is "Airpower" and not the actual ship itself. For without aircraft, the aircraft carrier really would be quite useless. Warships docked together during the Pearl Harbor attack was a traditional method of docking naval ships (parking ships) prior to the acceptance of AIRPOWER. This allows for economy of space, maintenance, accountability, and the easy flow of men and re-supply material.

What was the purpose of the doolittle raid and the problem military planners had to solve to make successful?

The Doolittle Raid of Saturday, 18 April 1942, was designed to be symbolic in nature. It would openly demonstrate to the Japanese & the Allies that the United States could & would strike back at the Japanese directly into their home islands. This raid occurred during a run of several months that the Japanese had a string of victories against the Allies. It signaled that the United States intended to bring the war to the Japanese. It was meant to boost the morale of Americans already fighting the Japanese, the American public, and the Allies (especially the Chinese). It was also intended to undermine Japanese propaganda and public support for the military leadership of Japan. The primary difficulty that the US military had to overcome:Because all US & Chinese land bases were too far away to use the US Army B-17 bomber, then…How do you get an aircraft carrier w/ aircraft close enough to Japan without being detected by the enemy? The mission analysis determined that it was virtually impossible to get an American aircraft carrier within 250 miles of the Japanese home islands without being detected prior to launching the strike, and then completely impossible to avoid detection after the strike hits Japan. This would endanger all US ships engaged in the raid. The further away from Japan that the aircraft could be launched on the strike, then the better the chance of the raiding ships escaping Japanese air & naval reactions. There was never any intention of the raid being a suicide mission for either the ships or the aircraft pilots. The US Navy carrier aircraft currently in service did not have the round-trip range to launch from a planned safe distance of at least 400 nautical miles. The only viable solution was to use twin-engine medium-range aircraft. However that posed its own challenges:How could a twin-engine medium-range aircraft take-off w/ a bomb-load from an aircraft carrier? If US Army aircraft are used, is there enough time for the crews to be trained to take-off from a carrier? Is it possible to lighten the bombers enough to allow for enough fuel & bombs that will not prevent the aircraft from taking off the deck of the carrier? What other aircraft modifications would be necessary?Does the aircraft carrier have to be modified? Is the bomber able to return to the carrier? If not, then where do they go?While traveling to the launch point with the bombers on-board, where are the bombers stored? Would the bombers fit on the aircraft carrier's elevators that are used to wheel them from the lower hanger deck to the flight deck?If the bombers are kept on the flight deck, doesn't this prevent the aircraft carrier from using its own carrier aircraft during the trip? How could this aircraft carrier protect itself and its escorts without its own carrier fighters?

How did the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano become famous?

Besides being the largest carrier sunk by a sub, she is mostly famous for being the 3rd sister of the battleship Yamato class. There were supposed to be three Yamato's: Musashi, Shinano, and the Yamato. The battleship Shinano was quickly converted to a carrier to replace the Midway losses. Prior to the conversion, even in Japan, the battleship was considered the primary warship.

What difference between amplitude modulation and double sideband suppressed carrier?

Both are forms of AM but in suppressed carrier a filter is used to attenuate the carrier frequency prior to transmission. This is usually done to reduce the total transmitter power consumption. An ordinary AM radio cannot correctly receive suppressed carrier stations, you must have a receiver that replaces the carrier prior to the detector stage.
