The Name of the street on which Jesus walked is today called Via Dolorosa. Parts of it used to be called Decumanus Maximus, just North of the temple grounds, going from east to west.

Pilate and the Roman Quarters were also just North of the temple grounds, where remains of the Antonio Fortress, Bethesda and the Praetorium can be seen even today.

Jesus was first brought from the temple through the Susa Gate to the Decumanus Maximus and led to the Praetorium. Then, carrying his own cross, went from the Roman Quarters towards the eastern Gate, called then the Sheep Gate, which in it's place today is the Lion's Gate. As he went outside, Simon of Cyrene was just coming out of the Country, and before he entered the gate, the soldiers compelled him to carry the cross, for Jesus was very weak and the slope of Golgotha was steep.

So, up the slope of Golgotha, which base is very near the gate, he walked and Simon followed, carrying his cross.

The direction east is different than many who hold to the traditions, that Jesus was crucified where today the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is located. But the Scriptures clearly refute the Claim of Helen, the mother of Constantine I, that Golgotha was only a hump in the ground, now below the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the following Points. Golgotha was:

  • Outside the city wall.
  • Very near a gate leading into Jerusalem.
  • Large enough for a large amount of People to gather there.
  • Those standing there saw the temple curtain rip.
  • Looked like the top part of a skull (Greek Kranion - cranium).

Why is it difficult to walk on a slippery road?

It is difficult to walk on a slippery road because the friction between your shoes and the road is compromised. When you stand, its not so much an issue, as most or all of the force vector from your body is pointing down. When you walk, however, there is a horizontal component of the force vector, which is what is accelerating you in a horizontal direction. Since the road is slippery, the coefficient of friction between your shoes and the road is less, causing the tendency to slip or fall.
