The Lincoln Memorial is located in Washington DC, the US Capital. It is in West Potomac Park. The Potomac River is behind the Memorial.
1. Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream" speech there. 2. The seated statue is 19 feet high and 19 feet wide. 3. It has been said that French positioned Lincoln's fingers to sign the letters A and L. 4. The Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's second inaugural address are inscribed on the north and south walls. 5. Murals by artist Jules Guerin depict an angel of truth freeing a slave and a united American North and the South. 6. It was built to resemble the Parthenon. (190 feet long 119 feet wide and almost 100 feet high) 7. There are 38 Doric columns around the whole memorial. 8. Henry Bacon designed the monument. 9. There is no city just west of the Lincoln Memorial. However, Arlington County, Virginia is across the river (which runs generally north-south there) and is fully enough developed to be thought of by many as a city. The first city one comes to heading west from the Lincoln Memorial is the city of Falls Church. The city of Alexandria is on the west bank of the Potomac River across from part of the District of Columbia immediately to the south of Arlington and south of the Lincoln Memorial.
Lincoln's vision was to see the North and the South as one Nation that worked together and got along together as one.
The walking distance from the fountain on the West side of the Capitol Building to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, walking on the North side of the pebbled path of the National Mall, and taking the outter paths of the Washington Monument and the WWII Memorial, it is 2.31 miles.
