The past monetary system for El Salvador were Colons in a coin form. 100 centavos (cents) equaled one Colon. On January of 2001 El Salvador began using dollars, but still continued to use Colons as well.

In 2001, the national currency of El Salvador was legally changed to the American dollar. However, prior to this, the national currency was the Salvadorean colon, which is approximately 8.75 USD (United States Dollars.)
