The distance to the sun from Earth is about 93 million miles.

No people have ever gone farther away from Earth than the Moon.

Since the moon orbits around the earth, being on the moon could put you closer

to the sun by about 238,000 miles, or 1/4 percent of the total distance.

But the Apollo moon landings were all timed to give the astronauts the advantage of

daylight plus long shadows at the landing sites, making it easier for them to perceive

distances accurately. This meant that the landings all took place near the First Quarter

or Last Quarter phases ,,, when the moon is 90 degrees from the sun in our sky, and

therefore essentially the same distance from the sun that earth is.

Bottom line ... nobody has ever been appreciably nearer or farther from the sun than

you are when you stand on the earth.

Probably Mariner 10 NASA's mission to Venus and Mercury at about 46,000,000 km from the sun at it's closest aproach. Also the Messenger space craft which will enter Mercury orbit in 2011. It has already flown by Mercury once but has to slow down to enter orbit so will fly by Venus once more and mercury twice more before finally going into orbit around Mercury. Mercury receives 16 times more light and heat from the sun anything closer to the Sun would probably fry.

The would have to be close to 91,402,506 miles, which is the distance between earth and sun at perihelion. If moon missions have occurred while the earth is at perihelion, and the moon happened to be in position for the new moon phase, then the people on the moon, or in the lunar orbiter when it is on the far side would win the prize, although compared to the distance between earth and sun, the distance from earth to moon is insignificant. If moon missions have not happened around the time of perihelion, then probably it would be people in orbit around earth, either in a shuttle or perhaps in the space station, around the time of perihelion. Otherwise, I believe the winner would be any person on the earth (or in a plane?) where it is exactly solar noon at the moment of perihelion.

The Americans sent a space probe to Mercury in the 1960's but it did not go into orbit. It flew by taking pictures and would have inevitably been drawn into the sun.
