The Nazi- Soviet Pact was an agreement between Germany and Russia that promised neither would attack the other for 10 years. There was also an economic agreement attached it to that said Germany would exchange manufactured goods for Russia's raw materials. The pact only lasted 2 years before Germany invaded Russia. It was said that from the beginning Hitler considered the agreement a very tactical, temporary movement.

Hitler, fearing another two front war as in World War 1 conducted the Non-Agression Pact. This pact made both Germany and Russia neutral between one another and they both shared the lands of occupied Poland. This concealed the true incentive of Hitler, who used the pact to enshroud his conquest of Russia and give the country's occupants a false sense of security. Alligning with Slavs, mere "subhumans" was out of the question in real terms. Afterwards, he broke the pact and attacked Russia in Operation Barbarossa which literally meant defeat for Germany and it's "Aryan" people.

Late in 1939 the German Soviet non aggression pact was signed. This pact basically said that there would be no armed conflicts between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. One aspect of this pact was that soon after Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, the Soviet Union occupied the eastern half of Poland. This part on the non agression pact was held in secret. Thus England & France were caught off guard. There was little to no resistance as the German army & air force crushed the Polish army on the western half of Poland.

The pact allowed Germany to take Poland without any interference from the USSR. And since Germany and the USSR were lined up together, Britain and France were prevented from helping Poland in any practical way. Since Germany and the USSR later became bitter enemies, it is often conveniently forgotton that by signing this pact, Stalin aided Hitler in starting the war.
