For a healthy young adult, the daily recommend intake is 2.4 mcg.
For pernicious anemia or other digestive issues you should take 1000 mcg per week.
Elderly people may benefit from 10 to 25 mcg per day of vitamin B-12.

You can take B-12 orally, as either pills or sublingually. (ineffective for people with stomach surgery or pernicious anemia). You can also get B-12 delievered directly to the bloodstream via injections or B-12 transdermal patches.

The reference range considered normal varies between countries but is somewhere between 150-900pg/mL. However, people can develop a deficiency well within these limits. Japan, for instance, treats anyone whose level is below 500 and has a significantly reduced incidence of dementia in its population. What matters more is whether the person has B12 deficiency symptoms and trial injections should be given to see if they help. Vitamin B12 is very safe to take and you cannot overdose on it. Any excess is simply excreted in the urine. Undertreating, or even worse not treating at all, is far more serious and leads to irreversible nerve damage and eventually dementia and death.
