The plebeian tribunes were the representative of the plebeians, the commoners. The trubunus milutus (military tribune) was a young man who aspired to a public office career and was elected to this post. He worked as augmentative officer for the commanders. The tribunus cohortis was an officer who commanded the cohort, one of the ten units of a legion which was a bit like a battalion.

∙ 13y agoA tribune was a Roman official who was supposed to look after the interest of the common people. He sat in the Senate and had the power to veto any act or legislative proposal, except that of a dictator. He could also propose laws that would benefit the common people such as land reform or maybe simply to provide another public fountain in a crowded area. His person was sancrosanct, which means that even though he did not have lictors, he could not be hindered in any way.
However, by the time of Julius Caesar, the office of Tribune was "stacked" in favor of certain political forces. For example, the tribune, Clodius, was a Caesar man and used his veto against any legislation against Caesar's interests. Other politicians did the same.
