The Montreal Canadiens were formed in 1909 as a member of the National Hockey Association. The club, originally known as the Club Athletique Canadien, was created by the NHA in response to the all-French Le National club formed by the competing Canadian Hockey Association. The CHA folded after only a few weeks of play, and the Canadiens were purchased the following year by athletic promoter Georges Kendall (known in Anglo-Canadian society as George Kennedy). In 1917, when the NHA ceased operations, Kendall joined with the rest of his fellow owners in forming the National Hockey League.

Royal St. John's Regatta In Newfoundland and Labrador. The Royal St. John's Regatta is an annual event officially dating back to the early 1800's, however some evidence points to the fact that these boat races were held as early as the late 1700's.
