The order of America's Military Decoration Rank, from highest to lowest, is as follows: Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross (Army), Navy Cross (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard), Air Force Cross (Air Force), Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and various campaign and service medals.
There is a prescribed order for display of America's military decorations. It is called "Order of Precedence", and each service has its' own. The decorations (medals) are displayed from the highest ranking to the lowest.

The foremost is to maintain order and discipline in the rank and file and by instituting rank structure some men are made superior and responsible for others. Rank structure also serves as an incentive for all servicemen to work hard and progress upwards on the rank structure.
