A man named Francisco de Ibarra was looking for gold mines far to the north of Mexico in 1563, and called the area Nuevo Mexico. [Nuevo means New.] He reported what he found as being in "a New Mexico. But the name was officially established by Juan de Ornate when he was made the first governor of the new Province of New Mexico in 1598.
