Crooked, askew, awry, diagonal. Mostly used in the South, often to describe a badly made thing. Also reputed to be a bogey-cat used as a threat to prevent the running away of slaves. The "wampus" part gives it an air of "faux Native American" with its similarity to wampum, not unlike mugwump for political fence-sitters, an extinct species.

"Caterwampus" is a word, not a phrase. It is peculiarly American and is believed to be derived from "catamount" or "cat-of-the-mountain", a mountain lion. This is especially true in its meaning as a bogey or imaginary beast. However, the same word has other meanings which do not appear to be in any way related to the bogey meaning, and it is possible that the other meaning has a separate etymology.

The term catawampus is usually heard in the southern region of the US. It originates from the French word 'quarter' which means four cornered. It is very similar to the term catty-corner.
