The endocrine system is a vast system made up of several organs throughout the body. The primary function is the secretion of hormones that act on organs all over the body to regulate their function. This regulation is either inhibitory or stimulatory depending on the organ and hormone released. To cite an example when the body has to much glucose in the bloodstream due to a meal the pancreas secretes insulin from the alpha cells of the islets of langerhans. The insulin binds to the cells causing GLUT receptors on the cells to take in the glucose in the bloodstream.
