There is no accurate figure for relapses in addiction, because it requires self-reporting by people who are, by definition, unreliable sources. There is also the problem of defining "relapse." Take a person, clean for five years, who smokes grass once then never uses again. Did that person relapse? Or an addict who was clean for three weeks, attended NA meetings, but then uses again? Was that person "in recovery?" The drugs were probably never completely out of his system. Then there is the person who stops using, but makes no life changes and remains the same miserable s.o.b. for years. Was that recovery?

You see the problem.

Estimates vary too broadly to be meaningful. It is safe to say that most addicts relapse one or more times before getting clean for good. Figures run from 75% to 95%, depending on the source. I personally, in 19 years of recovery and several years working in the field, can count on my fingers the people that I know who never physically relapsed.

Addiction is, by definition, a disease of relapse.

As an alcoholic who is currently in recovery I have noticed that the number of peole in AA who have "slips" or who simply drop out of the program is well over 50%. In addition even those of us with years of sobriety can not take for granted that we will not relapse. All it takes is a moment of not being "spiritually" prepared and the disease can find a way to take over.

Any addict who follows the way of life offered in the 12 steps of Narcotics Anonymous can stay clean one day at a time.

If you are struggling with an addict in your life, please, do not try to control their using. Please visit your nearest nar-anon or al-anon group to seek guidance from those who have experience in that area. Sometimes our help can hurt!

Becoming a member of a co-fellowship may just be the shining example your loved one needs to follow suit with their own fellowship!

A very good amount. It does matter how strong a drug is though. You can get addicted from cocaine even if your a first time user. Moral of the story, don't do drugs. They may give you a good high, but they mess you up.
