Literacy rates are low in the some parts of Africa because of a lack of schools. It is very difficult to travel the necessary miles that sometimes separates schools.

Islam's spread through West Africa corresponded with a rise in literacy. In order to understand the Qur'an and study it, a person needed to be literate. Prior to this written tradition, most of West Africa was entirely illiterate.
