soilology (heh heh!)
Pedology(from Greek: Ï€Îδον, pedon, "soil"; and λόγος, logos, "study") is the study of soils in their natural environment.[1] It is one of two main branches of soil science, the other being edaphology. Pedology deals with pedogenesis, soil morphology, and soil classification, while edaphology studies the way soils influence plants, fungi, and other living things.
Most people, including soil scientists, call them 'soil scientist.' There are also two terms that exist that I rarely hear used:
edaphologist - This is a soil scientist who studies soil as a medium for plant growth. This includes specialists in soil fertility and soil management, for example.
pedologist - This is a soil scientist who studies soil as a natural body. They study soil formation, development, change over time, how the soil reacts to environmental change, etc.
Many soil scientists today play both roles, which is probably why the two terms are seldom used.
Well, study of soil is pedology, and rocks is petrology. Geology is the study of the earth's processes, so that would include rocks and soil, but also tectonic plates and volcanoes and stuff. I don't know if anything is dedicated to just soil and rocks. I'm pretty sure pedology has some classification by content, which would include stones, but I'm not really sure.
Hope that was helpful.
