Photographs are taken in a lot of places, but often professional photos are taken in a Photography studio. Sometimes camera work is referred to as "on location," which just means wherever something is happening rather than in a studio or in a staged environment.

In my experience (which is dated) there are three possible words to describe where professional photographs are taken (or "made"): The studio; the camera room; or the location.

Many photographers simply use the blanket term "studio,"but in our parlance, the word "studio" referred to an entire photographic business, which might house a reception/sales area, offices, conference room, dressing rooms, a kitchen if the studio photographed food, and so forth, but the heart of the studio was the camera room, the physical space within the studio which contained the cameras, camera stands, lights, props and all other appurtenances used to actually create the photographs.

If we were on location, we simply referred to the "location."

Depends what kind of photography...

- in a studio doing fashion photography or portraits

- on the streets if you're doing "street" photography

- in a foreign country if you're doing a gig for let's say a tour guide or travel layout

- on top of Mount Everest if you hike up there for the view

- at a sporting venue (stadium, race track...) if you are into sports photography

- in the middle of a war zone if you are doing that kind of photojournalism

- underwater if you're doing marine photography

- in space if you are an astronaut

- in an operating room if you are doing microphotography....

just about any place anybody could be, you could be...!!
