Climate is the average, or usual weather of a place. This is based mainly on the average temperature and also the rainfall. Latitude is one major effect of the climate - that is how near the place is to the tropics or the polar regions. Nearness to the sea also affects the climate.

There are several types of climate: tropical climates include hot and wet equatorial regions with rain all year round. This climate supports dense forrests, like those in the Amazon and Zaire basins.

Temperature zones range from the mediterranean lands with hot dry summers and cool, moist winters, to the cool coniferous forset regions of the northern hemisphere. Beyond the coniferous forests is the treeless tundra with its long winters. And beyond the tundra are the snow-covered polar lands.

The climate determines the vegetation and animal life of a region. But people can live comfortably anywhere, if their homes are equipped with central heating and air conditioning.
