That a cyclone carries Dorothy to Oz, that magic traveling shoes bring her back to Kansas and that in between Dorothy meets bad and good witches, makes friends and commits three crimes is a summary of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, the original 1900 book edition begins with a cyclone carrying Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto in the family farmhouse all the way from Kansas, over the rainbow and into the magical land of Oz. Dorothy meets a bad witch, two good witches and one humbug magician. She makes friends with three unlikely traveling companions. She does what she must to get through pleasant and unpleasant experiences. For example, she commits two murders and one theft. She asks and gets help for the realization of her three friends' dreams from the Wizard and of her own from Glinda the Good Witch. In the end, she acts sad to leave her friends in Oz but overjoyed at being reunited back in Kansas with her beloved Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.

That a frightening natural event leads a young farm girl on a voyage of discovery of her own strengths and of the positives and negatives of interacting with others is a synopsis of "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, the discovery is through actual adventures in the original 1900 book edition. The book therefore emphasizes the many possibilities for self-realization in the world. In contrast, the discovery is through dreamed and therefore imaginary adventures in the beloved 1939 film version. The movie therefore emphasizes the problem-solving capabilities of the human mind.

That is little farm girl is lost in a cyclone and manages to find her way back home after many adventures is the short plot of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919).

Specifically, a cyclone carries the Kansas farm girl Dorothy, her pet dog Toto and their family farmhouse over the rainbow and into the magical Land of Oz. Dorothy desires to get back to Kansas. But the Munchkins native to the part of Oz where she lands explain that a Deadly Desert surrounds the entire land and cannot be crossed. Then the Good Witch of the North expresses the opinion that Dorothy travel to the Emerald City to consult the Great Wizard Oz. She gives Dorothy a pair of silver shoes worn by the Wicked Witch of the East, who is killed by Dorothy's house landing on her. The shoes have some unknown charm.

Dorothy goes by the yellow brick road to see Oz and picks up three traveling companions in so doing: the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. Dorothy, Toto and their three friends have an appointment with the Wizard, who demands in exchange for his services the death of the Wicked Witch of the West.

So Dorothy is accompanied by Toto and their three friends on her trip westward to the witch's castle. But along with the Lion and Toto, Dorothy is captured by the Winged Monkey, the witch's slaves, and carried to the witch's castle. The Tin Woodman is dumped onto very big, sharp rocks whereas the Scarecrow's body is left scattered in pieces. In the castle, Dorothy is enslaved, and the Lion imprisoned, by the witch. The witch's magical rod makes Dorothy trip, and the witch steals one of the silver slippers when Dorothy falls. Dorothy angrily manages to grab a bucket and empties it on the witch when the latter refuses to give back the slipper. The witch melts into a brown sugary liquid, which Dorothy washes and sweeps out the door after retrieving her other slipper.

The five friends return to the Emerald City, where all but Dorothy and Toto realize their dreams in the course of a scamming audience with the humbug Wizard. The Wizard recognizes that he will just have to take Dorothy and Toto back to Kansas himself. He relies on a hot air balloon to do so. But he sails off in the balloon before Dorothy and Toto climb inside.

An Emerald City soldier then suggests that Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, may be able to help since she is a powerful sorceress. The five friends therefore traipse southwards to Glinda's castle. The Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman travel to their respective destinations through Glinda's judicious use of the Winged Monkeys, whom she then frees. Dorothy and Toto travel back to Kansas through Glinda's explanation of the traveling power of the silver slippers.
