The poem is about an individual on a train with strangers going to an unknown destination but despite the fact that they are surrounded by people, there is still an element of isolation because everybody is a stranger in the sense that we will never truly know everything about a person no matter how well they might think they know them -- this approaches the idea that there will always be something that remains unrevealed to others forever even to themselves creating a feeling of somewhat loneliness. This can be seen as metaphor for life's journey (the train) as we never know where life will lead us and the multiple people (people in the train) that come in and out of our lives -who start and end as strangers no matter the relationship that could have held in the duration they spent in our lives/train.
My own interpretation as a 17 yr old who is writing an exam in three hours and happened to stumble upon this question from ten yrs ago. forgive me if it is wrong.. just wanted to see if I'm able to articulate my thoughts well when approached with unseen poetry. Hope this could be helpful to some in the future haha
