The transmission has to have the lower speeds with more torque to get the car moving. They are put on the gear shift so that if needed they can be used. Getting out of mud or snow, you use first or second so that the wheels will not spin as easily and keep traction.

The real problem is manually shifting from gear to gear with an automatic transmission. If you are referring to the automatic upshift, there may be a problem with the EGR system or vacuum system.
