Green house gas absorbs the radiation that would actually be emitted into space. This raises the earth's temperature. Clouds, absorption through the surface of the earth, earth's magnetic field changes, etc., relate to heat transfer in the earth-atmosphere system.

The actual theory is that the earth is on a tilt so it always has rays from the sun . . . except for the night. One reason is because of radiant energy, this strikes an atom or molecule and the molecule gets a lot of energy which makes it move faster causing the molecule to make more heat. And if thousands of molucules are doing this then they must be producing a lot of heat.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through matter by molecular activity (hot metal). Convection is the transfer of heat by the movement of a mass or substance from one place to another (liquid). Radiation is the transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves(travels through space). Conduction is the least important.

Heat is transferred by convection within the liquid outer core and in the mantle. Convection in the mantle is caused by cooling of rock near the crust, which then sinks back into the lower mantle over periods of millions of years.

The Earth's atmosphere is heated by a process called the Greenhouse Effect. Certain gases in the atmosphere function as an insulating barrier, trapping infrared radiation.
