The 4th Amendment prevents unreasonable search and seizure. Originally, this was a reaction to English troops demanding quarter of residents of the colonies, and helped defend rights and privacy of citizens... until the 1960s. That's when courts started weakening the amendment, allowing government to access information that you shared with other people or companies without a warrant. This has had disastrous effects during the digital age.
