We are currently studying the altar in our Suday School class.. We must repair the altar of God in our homes and churches. We seek stuff instead of God in so many churches. Only the hungry will be filled.

In the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Anglican/Episcopalian Church, and some Lutheran communities within the Lutheran Church, members go (approach) the altar to receive Holy Communion and in some instances a blessing from the minister, priest or bishop. In other denominations in Christianity, people go to altar when their pastor calls forth people who wish to give their lives to God and/or receive a prayer from the congregation.

Since your question is general and not specific, I gave a general answer giving examples of different Christian denominations.

altar. In the Christian tradition, this word (seemingly derived from the Latin altus, meaning "high," as an altar is usually a raised platform or table, where gifts are offered to God or where sacrifices are made) refers to the table used for the celebration of the liturgy of the Eucharist. For Christians, the altar of the Lord is the place where the sacrifice of Christ on the cross is celebrated; the table of the Lord is the place where Christians receive the Eucharist as food; some Christians also understand the altar as a symbol of the tomb of Jesus. (See CCC 1182, 1383)

In the Old Testament, the purpose of the altar was to sacrifice animals. In the New Testament, the altar is a place to go to offer repentance and ask for divine intervention for the travails of life.

We go to the altar to:

  • CONFESS

We confess our sins to God and Reveal to Him what we have done and ask forgivness. The very second you do that, He forgives you. That's one of the main reasons.

  • WORSHIP

We go to the Altar to worship Him. Quite self explainitory. :)

Pslam 43:4

4 Then I will go to the altar of God, To God my exceeding joy; And upon the lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.

  • DECLARE

We go to the altar sometimes as a step of Faith. Let's say when you ask Jesus into your life, you go up. It declares that you will make a stand and go out of your comfort zone.

Why is the altar stone covered in linen?

The "altar stone" is the true altar. The rest of the "altar" is not strictly speaking an altar, but the support for the altar. The altar stone usually has the relics of saints contained within it, and it should be covered with three clothes, although nowadays, many places dispense with the lower two. Symbolically, the linen cloth (the topmost cloth that covers the altar) signifies the linen in which the dead body of Our Lord was wrapped.
