If you are asking about the original Macintosh, the purpose was to provide a personal computer with system software that was removed from the user. In other words, to provide a user with a graphical user interface (GUI) based OS in which the user did not realize the OS was there performing background functions. This was much different from the other options at the time that were similar to MS-DOS and were a more arcane form of OS being mostly command line based.
Essentially, the purpose of Apple's Macintosh computers was to finally bring computing to non-professional users by introducing a GUI that was easy to use and quick to learn.
