For the same purpose that Lady Mary, the mother of Jesus, wore modest clothing and a head scarf.
It's the same reason that nuns do the same.
Pious men and women have always worn modest clothing because:
1) It promotes a person based on themselves, not their outer appearance.
2) It creates a harmony in society that allows for women to be treated properly and not treated as objects or male tools of satisfaction.
Early and some modern Feminism still practice and promote Modest clothing, so as to free women from the oppression of being treated only skin deep.
