He was paid to paint the painting by the Duke of Milan and the Duke chose the theme of the painting. It took him 4 years to paint and the Duke was very lucky it was finished. Da Vinci was known for not finishing projects.
Because his employer requested he do so. Leonardo worked for Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, for nearly eighteen years (1482-99). The Duke decided he wanted this particular religious scene painted and Leonardo, who was not stupid, decided painting it made perfect financial sense.
It took place for Jesus to have a chance to say goodbye to His disciples, and to worn them about the trials ahead.....
Leonardo da vinci wanted to see what happened if he painted with oil/tempera al fresco. The result was a glorious mural that has partly fallen down due to reaction with water in the air.

Many painters have painted the last supper. But you are probably referring to Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper". It is not actually a painting, it is a mural (wall painting). It was painted on the wall of the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan.
Jacobo Robusti Tintoretto, (1518-1594) painted this version of the Last Supper. The painting is an oil on canvas, 12 feet by 18 feet 8 inches. It can be seen in San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice.
The Last Supper = the last meal Jesus ate with his disciples was when Jesus was 33. The chronology is disputed, it might have been somewhere between 7 BC and 7 AD. So much for your question. But maybe you do not mean what you write. Maybe you want to know when the painting representing that Last Supper was painted. This is also difficult to answer, because this subject has been painted by hundreds of artists from the 3rd to the 20th centuries. So, maybe you believe that Leonardo da Vinci's painting 'The Last Supper' is the only one. That is a mistake. Anyway it was painted 1495-1497.
