1. Contrary to popular belief the cat can hear higher frequencies than a dog, making them better at hearing. This is due to their higher evolved inner ear as well as the positioning of the ear itself. A Dog hears sounds then tries to understand where the sound is coming from (turn their head until both ears can hear the sound exactly the same). A Cats lowest frequency of hearing is 45hz, whereas a Dogs is 67hz (meaning a cat can hear lower sounds better). The highest frequency a Cat can hear is 64,000hz whereas the dog can only hear 45,000hz (meaning the cat can hear higher sounds better). In all, the cat hears better than a dog.

You can't determine "better" by one value alone. You have told us the cat has the wider aural band-width, but what are the animals' amplitude sensitivities related to frequency? Band-width alone does not mean the cat can hear somehow "better" than a dog, only that it can pick up a greater pitch range. On a more general point, animals have the hearing they need for their own species' lives, so comparisons of "quality" are meaningless anyway.

∙ 14y agoIf you think cats are quiet, you have never been to my house, at night, with my 2 cats racing around the house bumping into things, etc. But, I agree, cats are normally not terribly loud. They can't bark loudly like dogs can; they can only softly meow, and they can't really make any other sound. But even when they meow, cats aren't always necessarily quiet...

∙ 13y agoYes. Dogs were trained to ward off strangers and play with kids and other people in the old days. They were also trained to be friendly. So, the dogs are always barking when they see a friendly face, or when they see a suspicious face. However, with cats, they were trained to sit at home, and be solitary. So, dogs tend to make more noise.
