You put a colon between the two cell references so C2:D10 is the reference for the block of cells, also called a range.

B5 to B10 would form a block of cells referenced as B5:C10. So to find the highest value in that range, you would do:

=MAX(B5:C10)

What is range reference in Excel?

A range is a group of two or more cells that can be referenced as a single block using the top left and bottom right cells. The addresses of the two cells are separated by a colon to form the range reference. So the cell reference A3:A10 refers to all of the cells A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9 and A10. The cell reference C12:E14 refers to cells C12, D12, E12, C13, D13, E13, C14, D14 and E14. A range reference is always used in a function, like in the examples below: =SUM(A3:A10) =AVERAGE(C12:E14)

What could be a nonadjacent range in Excel?

A range can only be cells that are adjacent and in a rectangular shape. It is possible to select non-adjacent cells but this would not be regarded as a range. Each would be a separate range. So usually non-adjacent ranges will have gaps between them, although it is possible to have cells from to separate ranges right beside each other. You will know them by their boundaries around them.

In exel what is A selection of multiple cells called?

They can be called a Range or a Block. This is only if it is a single selection of a rectangular block of cells. It is possible to select cells that are not together, known as being non-contiguous, but this is not a range or block.
