Lenin saw religion as the 'opium of the people' and thus in the USSR Religion was not practiced. Some churches and other places of worship were ransacked and burnt down. But, after initial antireligious struggle in 20-30, religion regained some power, especially WWII. Since that time, most churches are functional.
