The role of conflict in interpersonal relationships should be a tool for finding what makes the other party or parties (family members, friends, etc.) more comfortable and happy with the relationship. Conflict with someone close should be used as an opportunity to bring out problems that exist in the relationship with the goal and mutual desire to overcome, compromise, or just acknowledge the conflict exists. When conflict exists and it's not acknowledged and dealt with, it has a detrimental effect on a relationship. A pattern of avoiding conflict can destroy a relationship.

Conflict in and of itself is not bad in a relationship, but it depends on how it is done and what is its aftermath. Whenever you have two people in a relationship, there is always going to be conflict, but it is how you handle the conflict that matters.

For instance, I would say if you and your significant other are always arguing, then that is not a relationship worth hanging onto. But when you do have conflict, do you forgive afterward or hang onto the bitterness and other bad things?

If you are doing the relationship right, you will work through the conflict and work together to get answers instead of one person having to always be right and the other always wrong.

How you feel about relationships in general also matters. If each person you are involved with is just an object to be exploited until you are tired of them, then you will never have a good relationship with anyone. If people are just disposable to you like a piece of trash, then you cannot expect your relationships to last, and that there will be a lot of hurt in each one.

If you are seeking to do these things in your own strength, then you will likely fail. But if you are asking God for His wisdom in your relationships and to hep you, then you have the best chance to succeed. Everyone needs God's help, but not everyone wants it, unfortunately.
