The role of irony in the heart of darkness is most definitely apparent at the end when marlow lies to kurzt's intended concerning what his last words were. Throughout the entire novella, Marlow displays a certain hatred for Imperialism and hypocrisy yet when he is put in a situation where the truth is demanded from him, he lies and says that kurtz's last words were her name when in reality his last words were, "the Horror, the horror"

In "Heart of Darkness," irony is used to highlight the contrast between appearances and reality, particularly in the depiction of colonialism and its effects. Through irony, the novel exposes the hypocrisy and brutality of European imperialism, as well as the dehumanizing consequences of the quest for power and domination. Irony also serves to critique the darkness within human nature and the moral ambiguity that exists in the characters' actions and beliefs.

Why is the Heart of Darkness divided into three sections?

It has to do with "toward the heart of darkness", "in the heart of darkness," and "out of the heart of darkness." It seems nicely organized to me, but where these breaks specifically happen- I'm not sure if its where the book breaks or just within the story. ...If that makes sense. :)
