What is the shape of Maryland?

If you look closely, it actually looks like a pistol (gun), aimed west, with Washington DC at the "trigger".

The widest part is at the Atlantic and both shores of Chesapeake Bay. Then it narrows, its southern border being the Potomac River. There is only a separation of about 2 miles (3 km) between West Virginia and Pennsylvania at Hancock, Maryland. The "tip of the barrel" consists of Allegany and Garrett counties, extending to within 50 miles (80 km) of the southwest corner of Pennsylvania.
