What is the source for CFC's?

A total of 13 CFCs and HCFCs were banned under the Montreal Protocol in 1987. Scientists have now found four more different CFCs and suspect there are more. These gases may come from chemical fertiliser production, but they may also be from an illegal source. These CFCs are slowing the recovery of the ozone layer hole over Antarctica.
Chlorinated Fluorocarbons (CFCs) are synthesised chemicals most commonly used in refrigeration and cleaning products. Since their impact on the atmosphere's protective ozone layer was established, they have been phased out of production and replaced with newer ozone-friendly chemicals. The most likely source of such chemicals now is old refrigeration and air-conditioning installations, including cars made before 1996.
Not all CFCs have the same staying power in the atmosphere. The duration of their existence is measured as a half-fife (the time for half of a release of CFCs to decompose). CFCs' half lives range from 60 to 640 years depending on the compound, the related compounds HFCs have a half life of2 to 250 years. again depending on the compound.

Countries agreed at the Montreal Conference to ban the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). It was clear to everyone that CFCs were damaging the ozone layer and this could lead to severe damage to humans. This ban has been the most successful international intervention ever. No CFCs are now being released and scientists hope the ozone level will have self-repaired by 2060 (CFCs hang about in the atmosphere for up to 75 years!).
