The main source of the Orange river is the Singu River, which is raised above the edge of the eastern plateau. To the north, the source is the Seati River, located near Mont-aux-Sources in the north. Further north there are the Malibamatso headwaters.

Ironically, it has nothing to do with the colour of the water.

The river was named the Orange River by Colonel Robert Gordon, commander of the Dutch East India Company garrison at Cape Town, on a trip to the interior. Gordon named the river in honour of William of Orange.
